Prehistory part 3
Below are a few of many many skateboarding drawings. My dad got a little beige Apple MacIntosh in maybe 1987. I spent a lot of time drawing stuff like this first piece in its bundled program 'MacDraw' that year (impressively the machine was still working – and in use – until just a couple of years ago). Below that are drawings of mid-west skater icons Neil Blender and Jesse Neuhaus, and 'studies' for a semi auto-bio comic I was planning (there was a lot more planning of comics than there was actual drawing of them when I was a kid). The last few drawings I'm pretty sure were heavily influenced by Love and Rockets and Rocketeer.

Prehistory part 1
A few months back D&Q asked me to send some high school drawings for a project they were working on. In the end none of it got used (maybe because I waited about a month before actually looking for stuff, and they had a tight turnaround), but once I got around to fishing out my old sketchbooks I had a lot of fun combing through them. I'll probably post more in the next few days, including some actual comics, and a few (of the hundreds and hundreds) skateboarding drawings.

Gateway Drug
A few weeks ago a friend in France sent me a screen shot of this exchange he had with an ebay seller. He'd just received a few hard to find issues of Big Questions from the guy, and had a question:

Kim Winderman and David Uthus at Lula
Next Tuesday, 6-9 the Fall show opens at Lula Cafe. It features David Uthus and Kim Winderman. More about the show here. I'm really happy to have their work up. They're both singular photographers working, loosely speaking, with landscape photography in very different ways.
I came across Kim through the recommendation of Debbie Carlos, who we showed at Lula a year or so back. Based on the recommendation I assumed she was based in Chicago and promptly shot off an email. Turns out she's in L.A. and it took a little while to work out logistics. Her photos are quiet and dark. Intricate, moody abstraction found in natural forms.
I know David through skateboarding, mostly. He studied film and has done
a lot of shooting for Pretty Skateboards in St Louis, as well as for
the amazing Randy Ploesser. But he's got a fertile mind and an eye for a
certain variety of quiet moment and understated beauty and absurdity in
the urban landscape. The shots in the show are all taken on his cellphone. Come by the opening and say hi.
