I drew these two strips instead... and then decided not to be a pest, and sent in a real list. But I've been going through these old sketchbooks lately, as part of a book project, came across these, and realized I never did put them up. Among the amazing people I met and worked with in France were Raphael Urwiller and Mayumi Otero who work as printmakers and book artists under the name Icinori. They make the kind of stuff that simultaneously makes you happy to be alive and stoked to get back to work, and also makes you kind of want to give up because you'll never make anything quite so quietly beautiful, unexpected and profound. They designed and printed the collaborative, Hercules themed screen printed book I mentioned here (toward the bottom).

Back in April I did a post about this amazing book from the 80s that I'd rediscovered of gorgeous paintings and histories of spaceships. Three of the images I included in the post were by a guy named Angus McKie. When I was in Newcastle in October I had the good fortune to meet a friend of a friend of the man himself and was allowed to hold on to a couple of his comics for a day. Unfortunately I didn't really have time to actually read them. Which is a shame. Just look.

How have I not seen this done before? A punch up in front of a projection in a porn theatre? Brilliant.

It's like part Heavy Metal, part Hitchhiker's Guide, part CF, part Little Annie Fanny part Star Wars. And part just straight up sublime epic oil painting. Apparently he's still working.

Below are the last few drawings from overseas. The first two are from the day I arrived in France. I had a couple of hours to poke around the city and was able to locate a skatepark not far from Gare Du Nord where I stashed my things – though just rolling around the city turned out to be more satisfying. The third is from kind of a crazy thing that I saw one afternoon in Besançon, and the last two are drawings of people on the tube in London andfrom a couple of cafes in Newcastle.

X in time for Justmas

I'm back from the road and beginning to regain my equilibrium. Very nice to be home (for a second – tomorrow I head up to Minneapolis to see family and to attend the Minneapolis Indy Expo). I've still got a bunch of stuff to post from the road, but I also just put a few new things up at the store:

For the signing I did in Brooklyn at Desert Island Gabe asked me to put together a small zine or print to have as a giveaway with the book. I told him he was crazy, I had no time and wasn't a six hundred page graphic novel and 30 city book tour enough? Geez. And then about a week before I left I got inspired and decided he was right, what a good idea. Wasn't he surprised when, with no time to spare I sent him a 24 page zine of outtakes, process pages and various other related material that wasn't published anywhere else. And I demanded that he print the cover in color. And he actually got it done. Bless that man. This is the result.
Included are images of some matchbooks I made to go with issue #3 and the strip I did during a workshop at the DH Lawrence ranch in 1996 that includes the first appearance of the birds anywhere ever and the germ of the story that would eventually turn into BQ. Completely unbeknownst to me at the time. And a bunch of other stuff. 24 pages, on newsprint, 7" x 8.5".

At Pierre Feuille Ciseaux one of the first things we did was a group collaboration to make a screenprinted book on the subject of the Twelve Tasks of Hercules. The edition was only large enough for the participants to each get one (man, they were beautiful, sorry folks!). But I like Hercules (image of his Ascent to Mount Olympus with Sock and Office Chair, here) and so I couldn't shake the theme. I ended up doing this print as well. I gave most of them away to the other artists, printers and support staff, but I have 15 or so to spare. 2-colors, 12" square, edition of 55.

And lastly:

I made these Trading Cards a few months back as a sort of promotional give-away kind of thing. I sent small stacks to stores that ordered The Game, and put cards in orders from here. I sent a stack to Drawn & Quarterly to do with as they saw fit as well. I also made a few full sets to sell on the road for gas money. I'm going to make one last batch a little later this month. I'm taking orders starting now so I know how many to make (they're a little labor intensive to print, cut and wrap). There are 24 individual cards, representing a few more characters than are on the flaps of the book, and several of the vignettes are different. the paper stock is the thickest, chunkiest, acid-free art paper I can jam through my friend's high-res, six-color, archival ink printer. Action shots on the back. Sorry – no chewing gum. These won't ship until around November 25th. But that gives you all kinds of time before Christmas, kids.

When I was in London I stayed with Tom Gauld, his partner Jo and their two truly delightful daughters, Iris and Daphne (check out pages from Tom's forthcoming Goliath, here). Iris did a couple of wonderful little drawings for me while I was there, which I will also post soon, but Daphne did a drawing of me (above, complete with stocking cap), as well as one of Tom and I in conversation for Comica at Orbital (below) even including the slide show (note slide of bird in flight). The Marine Invertebrate Room

My fourth day in England I drove back to London from Leeds, arriving with enough time to get to the Natural History Museum for about an hour before it closed. There was a bunch of cool stuff I'd like to have sat down and drawn for a while, but wasn't in the mood, somehow. I ended up spending most of my visit in the Marine Invertebrate room, which was the emptiest room in the museum, it seemed. Me and a bunch of lonesome, weirdly beautiful shellfish and coral, regarding one another sympathetically across the centuries from behind glass.

These are Sea Cucumbers. Apparently when Sea Cucumbers feel threatened they spit out their guts and "breathing apparatus" at their perceived predator, coating it in sticky slime. They can then grow a new one. Which seems a small comfort somehow.

Lastly we have a Coelecanth. It's a bit out of place in this list, given its having a spine, but I thought it had a nice, sympathetic color. Apparently the people who know about these things thought the Coelecanth had been extinct for millions of years. Then they found some swimming about happily in the 40's. It's never too late.

So here are the last pictures post Pierre Feuille Ciseaux. The first few are of June and Charlotte's apartment in Besançon.

We got in late after a signing in Poligny and a few slight misadventures. The spread below is Chinese food from up the block. And the two cats above (both top and bottom) are Hercule (top) and...crap, I forgot the kittens name below. He was hilarious, though. Kept trying to follow Hercule up the shelf, but ended up each time collapsing down to the floor, dragging books and wires and various items down with him in a cascade. Look for him again in the next picture.

PFC part 2

One of the buildings housed PFC's three exhibitions: one featuring the work of Polina Petrouchina (and her mom, who did the sewing), one of my work and one of the results of the week of collaborative exercises from PFC last year, and (eventually), this year.

The exhibition of my work was, I think, the first time work from all my different books and all my various styles was squeezed into a single space together. I gave a gallery talk on Sunday, assisted by June for interpreting in French, and it was an interesting challenge to try to make it sound like it all made perfect sense.

The magical awesomeness of Pierre Feuille Ciseaux is a little difficult to express. But one big part of it was the support staff which included a team of screen printers and a second team of woodcut/lino printers who basically didn't sleep the whole week while this gaggle of 20 enthusiastic, spoiled artists banged out images for them to print. Below is Nono indulging my extremely tightly registered two-color printing job.

And the finished print. To get the red to really pop it was necessary to underprint it entirely with white. Even all those spindly little lines. Nono was probably ready to strangle me. by the end. He did an amazing job.
The main task of the screen printing/book-making team was to produce the book below. Almost everyone collaborated, starting on the first day, in doing a three color print based on one of the twelve labors of Hercules. Below is the cover, following are several spreads from the book.

Below, on the right, is the image I produced with Anton Kannemeyer. I drew Cerberus, he drew Hercules (I should mention that I was kind of inspired by the subject, my own print, discussed above is on the same subject – all 12 labors).

Today Pierre Feuille Ciseaux ends and gets dissassembled, Yesterday and this morning have been a series of whistful goodbyes as each of the 22 artists shuffles off by train or car. And so I'm finally getting around to posting some pictures from the week. It was truly amazing. Below are a number of shots of the grounds. The Saline (old world salt factory) where it took place is a group of buildings arranged in a half circle around a huge courtyard the size of a couple of city blocks.

Each of the buildings featured this carved stone detail...a representation of salt crystals forming in the underground caves.

Apparently the outlook at the top of this building was where the site manager positioned himself to keep an eye on the workers below.

The center of the compound was just an open field of grass, but behind the buildings, just inside the walled perimeter were a network of elaborate gardens. The pond outside my window was full of ducks most mornings.

The workroom. Several days stretched from, say 11am (I was a late riser) to one, two or three a.m. The time, ideas and impromptu projects flew.

The night at Brickbat in Philadelphia was the night the Famous Canadian Cartoonist Flu of 2011 really took hold and I started feeling miserable. We stayed with the incredibly gracious Matt Leines and he outfitted me with the building's penthouse which had a private bathroom that was actually bigger than my bedroom at home. It was awesome. Below are a few pictures from the house, and in particular a bunch of Matt's art collection, which was amazing. Stuff by Chris Johanson, Barry McGee, R. Tonight: Montreal

Just checked in to a hotel in Montreal after a couple of nights in the place of my birth in northern New Hampshire, and a really great talk yesterday at CCS in Vermont. I had a chance to embarrass one of my favorite cartoonists ever, Jason Lutes, by discussing his great influence on me while he sat in the audience.

Below are a couple of drawings I did while sitting in the audience at one of the panels at the Brooklyn Book Festival last Sunday.

So: tonight I'm at the D&Q store in Montreal. On Saturday and Sunday I'll be in Toronto at the Beguiling and the Word on the Street Festival. And then blessed blessed home.

Dispatches from the road and air

I've been on the road on the second leg of the tour for a week and a half now, but have been too busy to post much. Here are some (pre)tour stories from my sketchbook:

So far I've been in Baltimore, Bethesda (at SPX), Pittsburgh, Philly, and, for the last four days, New York City. More about all the above to follow. Aside from a case of the famous Canadian cartoonist flu pandemic of 2011, it's been completely awesome. Being on the road with Marc Bell rules. That guy's awesome. Tonight I'll be in Providence at Ada Books. Below are a couple of photos from Pittsburgh. Bill at Copacetic put up a back issue wall for me to sign next to. It's all comics about birds. Awesome. Below that is a shot of people waiting for Marc and I to start.

Just to let people know...the Hardcover of the book has been a bit scarce and will be for another week or three. That said, both Copacetic and Brickbat managed to secure more than the usual allotment of copies (sworn to secrecy regarding their methods) so if you can't find one, you might contact them. Lastly, Gabriel at Desert Island in Brooklyn printed up this awesome little newsprint zine collecting a number of outtakes, thumbnails and other unpublished paraphernalia related to Big Questions. Along with the trading cards it's something of a tour exclusive for the moment. Below is the cover.

On Sunday I finished a wall drawing I was asked to do for the CartoonInk show at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago's Sullivan Galleries. The show was curated by Surabhi Ghosh, Christa Donner and Jeremy Tinder with help from Sara Drake. There's a bunch of cool stuff to see there, including a new piece by Deb Sokolow (which happens to be right next to my wall drawing) and one of Lisa Cline's originals which is completely gorgeous – the photocopier doesn't do them justice. After a number of delays the show opens next weekend.

The first of these sketchbook spreads feature drawings of two people with whom I shared the Megabus on my way back to Chicago from Minneapolis a couple of weeks ago. The other two feature drawings of people on the El.

The last, left hand page, below: I was drawing the person sitting in the audience in front of me at Mark Bazer's Interview Show the other night, and then she turned out to be another guest on the show. Her name is Cameron Esposito. She's a comedienne. She was completely hilarious. This is her ear.

Lastly, by virtue of the timing of my trip to Minneapolis for the reading I did there on August 18th, I was forced to miss this year's epic skateboarding/camping/beer trip to Wisconsin. You can see pictures of the festivities at the, ahem, dude life blog.

So my videographer was getting drunk around a campfire somewhere in the badger-state wilderness but I decided to document my exploits nevertheless. In a more nineteenth century kind of way. It rained that night, so it was all in a trio of covered parking garages. At one point a cop rolled through and asked me the above question, before rolling on, and when I did finally get kicked out of the last spot, the security guard helpfully suggested that it was okay to skate in the one next door. This doesn't happen anywhere outside Minnesota.

The thing at Lula was really wonderful. More so than I could have even hoped. I don't think I got to talk to half the people I wanted to, because it was packed like sardines. There was already a line outside before the doors opened. Huge all encompassing thanks to the folks that made it possible: Jason and Lea and Susannah at Lula (and the servers and cooks who all made it seamless), John and Zak for making fun of each other in public, The Kyles (O and B) for their lovely meditations on fatherhood and that pesky generational gap, Liz from Quimby's who had the job of writing out everyone's credit card information and fending off angry fans when the book was gone. Amy Honchell who let me take half her work down for a night. Aleks for hooking up the sound system. Who else...? It's hard to say because it almost felt like everyone I know in this damn town was there. Kind of choked me up for a second. Y'all rule. For real. THANK YOU.

I'm doing a little experiment. In addition to readings, music and food at the Lula event on Tuesday, there will also be an impromptu, one day show of originals from Big Questions. I'm putting up a number of the featured pieces on my picture store. Sales will go live Tuesday--both to locals who can come out to the show and to internet browsers who can't – at about the same time. There are 12 pieces listed now – full pages and a few individual panels as well. More to come.

It may be worth noting that Big Questions originals haven't been available since around 2005 when I realized I needed to hold onto them in anticipation of the editing for the book. I'm making these few available now only in conjunction with the tour.

Recent Happenings in the Press

I made a sidebar (see right) with links to some of the reviews and other articles that have come out in the last few weeks regarding Big Questions. The interviews at Publisher's Weekly and Comic Book Resources, and the article in the Chicago Tribune are the most extensive and wide ranging. I just read over the one from the CBR site and was really pleasantly surprised--I did the interview while driving the rental car, between Portland and Seattle, and I remember feeling a bit distracted. But I don't think I come across that way. Alex Dueben had some really good questions and did his homework. A sample:

If we looked back at your sketchbooks as a kid, what would we see? Would we see a lot of nature studies and animal drawings?
Probably not. I remember there's a lot of Dungeons and Dragons characters. There's a lot of kids skateboarding and skate parks. In high school I started drawing skulls a lot. [Laughs] I definitely had that phase. I would draw these hot rods with giant engines and flames coming out of them and weird troll creatures driving them. Whatever came across my path I would draw.

Also discussed:
–whether the landscape of North Dakota is bleak
–comics and democracy
–how the Xeric Grant is like a golden egg
–lulling your reader into complacency and then sticking a knife in their ribs

James Romberger's piece at PW and Christopher Borelli's in the Trib are equally attentive and thoughtful readings (even if Borelli did say I was a server at Lula. Blasphemy--I was a cook). The press so far has been gratifying and humbling.

Here are some pictures from Genevieve Castree and Phil Elverum's house and church/studio in Anacortes, Washington. I stayed there on my way from Seattle to Vancouver, and it was awesome. Genevieve gave me a little jar of the most delicious tart cherry jam she'd made, gave me a tour of town, and told me the craziest story about Phil's great grandmother adopting a chimpanzee. Anacortes is great. I liked it there.

A small sample of Genevieve's studio. The one original page she had out (she's working on a book for D&Q) was kind of mind bogglingly beautiful. Nobody has such a thin, delicate yet confident line. And she pencils in orange.

The house reminded me a little of people's deceptively small, but liveable houses in New Hampshire, where my Dad lives. It might have partly been the residual smell of wood smoke.

Contrary to what got printed on the poster, the Chicago Big Questions Release Party and Comix-plosion is not next week. There were issues – a few of which had to do with me being better at drawing pictures of birds than I am at event planning – that forced a switch. The event is still taking shape, but there will be several special guests doing readings, some music, finger food (we're working on, among other things, doughnuts, in honor of everyone's favorite bird food), cheap beer, slightly pricier cocktails, original art on the walls, and Quimby's will be there selling books. It'll be at Lula Cafe off Logan Square. Details to follow. Here's the announcement on Quimby's site.

I'm back home. The first leg of the tour was amazing. Sold some books, sold some art, drove a thousand miles and managed to get a bit of skating in at pretty much every stop. Props to Portland and Vancouver for a couple of super good little skate plazas. One thing I was bad about was documenting the events... but I swear, people came out. Here's a shot from Needles and Pens site. They were better about it.

By the way, they mention on their site that they plan to make the work from the show available online in the next week. I'll try to keep tabs and make a note here as well.

I didn't document the events, or the skating for that matter, but I did get some photos of some of the places I stayed. In Portland that was at Nate's house. He's a friend of my brother-in-law from way back, he's in Witch Mountain and has a rad roommate named Matt who does kind of amazing metal cover art. Here's some stuff from Nate's house:

He also had an amazing super-old poster in his room, a sort of pinup style painting of the "women of the X-Men" with Rogue, the mohawked Storm and Kitty hanging out by the pool. from the late 80's probably. Amazing. And apparently super rare as the image doesn't seem to be anywhere on the web.

Lastly, I should probably mention Brian Ralph's diary comics from ComicCon. They're awesome. And not just because I'm in them.

Finishing up a few things in SF today, including a quick roll around Potrero Skatepark, and breakfast at Just For You where I learned to flip eggs, before heading over to Berkeley to do my thing at Pegasus. The event at N+P was amazing. All kinds of people showed up and stood, sat and laid on the floor to watch the slide show projected high up on the fifteen foot walls. The slide show even convinced a couple of Swedish holiday goers to buy the book they'd earlier deemed a bit heavy to carry with them on their plane ride home. So I must be doing something right. Here are a couple of pics of the N+P show itself from before the people showed up. My eternal gratitude to Andrew and Breezy for hooking this up and doing such a beautiful job framing and hanging the work.

I recently reprinted The Game, the fully painted strip I contributed to the giant sized Kramer's Ergot #7. I'm releasing it as a folded up, two-sided poster. The original strip, as it appeared in Kramer's was three pages. The poster version includes a fourth page, a sort of extended ending that I left off the original for a variety of reasons. The strip will be available in various comic and specialty book stores, and is now available, also, here. For the first week or so postage will be free.

Included with it also, and indeed included with every order from the picture store while supplies last, will be a Big Questions Trading Card (1 of 24) I recently made.

Also, prices on a couple of prints are temporarily reduced. So, all in all, so many reasons to go there and order some stuff.

Over the last several weeks I have been busily drawing on top of a number of half finished paintings given me by Nick Butcher and Nadine Nakanishi of Sonnenzimmer. The opening reception for the resulting show is being held at Fill In The Blank Gallery this Friday, the 20th of May, from 7-11. above is an unfinished painting, below are details of several more. You can read more about what the hell we were thinking here. The process has been, by turns, a delight, an ordeal, an education... It has turned out to be a vigorous conversation–and at times a vicious internal argument–between abstraction and representation, between painting and drawing, and between playfulness and planning. How Chicago Are You?

I'll be part of a panel talk this evening (6-8) about how and whether the peculiarities of a place (Chicago, in this specific instance) influences the art that happens there. The talk is at the Graham Foundation, which concerns itself with architecture, primarily, though the panel draws from and is intended to address all sorts of disciplines. Leading up to the event we were asked to take some pictures of the city that might bear on what we think about the topic. Below are some of the pictures I'll be showing. (The second to last one is hard to read--it's a picture of two long rows of brand new parking meters in a vast, abandoned, perhaps 6-8 square block area of abandoned lots).

My parents had been in a commune in San Francisco, and before that in the Peace Corps in Ethiopia with some friends. One of them, in his travels, had discovered Tintin and Asterix, and then had his interest in comics bolstered by the underground scene in San Francisco. He had a copy of a cookbook that Crumb illustrated that I found at age six or seven. I remember being fascinated and slightly disturbed.

In Watermelon Sugar

When I began doing these Richard Brautigan covers I'd never read any of his work and had a vague idea that he was a pot smoking psychedelic hippy writer, and that I wasn't going to like his work very much. I was wrong. In Watermelon Sugar is kind of amazing. It is clearly connected to the sixties counterculture milieu Brautigan was connected to, and concerns itself in part with something that seems a bit like a commune in a late sixties, California kind of way. But that is incidental to the heart of the book. There is a wonderful sense of blissful naivete underlaid with a pervasive dread that almost gave me goosebumps. The story feels set outside time in a way, but also has oblique far future, post-apocalyptic tones. In that way it reminded me very much of CF's POWR MASTRS.

Here's a passage from the book that I drew from for one sketch. A second accepted sketch, and something like the final cover are below that.

A Lamb at False Dawn

pauline began talking in her sleep at false dawn from under
the watermelon covers. She told a little story about a lamb going
for a walk.
"The lamb sat down in the flowers," she said. "The lamb
was all right," and that was the end of the story.
Pauline often talks in her sleep. Last week she sang a little
song. I forget how it went.
I put my hand on her breast. She stirred in her sleep. I took
my hand off her breast and she was quiet again.
She felt very good in bed. There was a nice sleepy smell
coming from her body. Perhaps that is where the lamb sat down.

The book's done

Last Monday night, at something like 1am I clicked on the upload button and sent the last remaining bits of the Big Questions collection to D&Q. There will likely be a few rounds of proofs and last minute scouring for stray commas, but basically, I'm done. And it's a huge relief. Here's the cover:
In addition to catching up on the rest of my life – which has been more or less on hold since I started the revision process last October – and sleeping a lot, I'm cleaning up my house which has been strewn with scraps and stray pages from the book. And coffee cups and stray shoes, bills, pen caps, rulers, cereal bowls and grocery store receipts. Some of the book related scraps found their way into the last few posts, without giving away too much of the new material here are a few more:

Below are a few new pages I've drawn for the Big Questions collection. The first two are replacements for the covers of #3 and #4, which both featured scenes that didn't otherwise appear in the books' interiors

Above is one of the few pages I decided to completely re-draw. It comes from issue #6. The two pages that follow are a new scene that combines the cover of #6 and a one page image-less passage of text from the end of #5 – Charlotte's Soliloquy.

Corrections

Below are a few drawings I've done in the last few weeks as corrections and/or added panels as part of the editing I'm doing of Big Questions in preparation for the collection. These three are mostly additions to sequences from #9 and #10.

I'm mostly trying to resist the impulse to redraw or add too much. The evolution the story and my approach to it is part of the package. At the same time, I started the book before I had much of an idea what I was doing. So there are some holes in the drawing and the story both, to be filled. I'll post a few more images from the process over the next few days.

Prints and Drawings Store

When I was a kid I had a bad habit of not turning in my homework. Sometimes that was because I didn't do it in the first place, but just as often it was because once it was done the box in my brain got checked and I'd forget it at home or lose it. Over the last several years I have on occasion done prints of my work for shows or because someone was interested in an image but couldn't afford to buy an actual painting. I moved last Spring and found that my cabinet of flat files needed lightening. So I am now turning in my homework. Just in time for Christmas. Help me lighten my flat files.

I'm doing a reading and slide show this Friday at 7:30 at the Book Cellar here in Chicago (4736 North Lincoln) for the release of the paperback of Joe Meno's Demons in the Spring. Also reading are Joe himself, and two of the other (brilliant) illustrators in the book, Nick Butcher and Jon Resh. I'll be doing a couple of stories about gods, one of whom has a peculiar revelation while walking around in Wisconsin.
